In the novel Foucault's Pendulum, two characters discuss a house that is not what it appears to be. People "walk by" this certain house in Paris, we read, "and they don't know the truth. That the house is a fake. It's a facade, an enclosure with no room, no interior. It is really a chimney, a ventilation flue that serves to release the vapors of the regional Métro. And once you know this you feel you are standing at the mouth of the underworld..."

Skyscraper Competition Winners Announced

The votes are in.  The winners of the 2011 Skyscraper competition are as follows:

1st Place:  Tie between Sam Pecoraro and Pablo Izquierdo
2nd Place: Sayyid Omar
3rd Place: Mayra Moreno
4th Place: Jorge Lara

Each winner will receive an extra credit grade for their efforts:  1st place +10, 2nd place +7, 3rd place +5, 4th place +3.  Congratulations to all entrants and winners!  This was a really fun and insightful project.

Ha Ha Funny!

What does it look like to you?

 This is an actual piece of chipboard found in the scrap box.  What does it look like to you?  In an upcoming exercise, students will explore abstract thought by taking a given shape and elaborating upon their personal interpretation.  Stay tuned for some (no doubt) interesting work!

Skyscraper review and voting to begin next week.

Once all three sections are finished with their scale object exercise (3/8", 1/4" and 1/8") we will have a somewhat in-depth presentation, gallery walk and critique of the skyscraper entries.  All students will then vote for the best design.

All projects entered will receive extra credit. However, only those that meet the initial design criteria of height and base will be eligible for voting.  For those students who have submitted a design, please be prepared to explain "WHY?" you designed your building the way you did.  Good luck to everyone...this will be fun!

Skyscrapers everywhere

It appears quite a few people decided to enter the skyscraper competition.  All entrants will be given extra credit, and we will begin voting Monday.  See you there...have a great weekend!
